Games to help children learn math well

1. Plastic Cups

This game helps your child learn about size differences: “I have a small cup, and you have a big one for me.” Stack plastic cups based on size or buy a similar set of toys, such as teacups or blocks.

Try leaving toys all over the place, then give your child specific requests; for example: “Get me the right cup,” “the left one,” “upper – lower,” etc.

2. Matching and Inconsistent

This activity helps your child learn about sizes and shapes. You need to teach your child how to sort familiar objects. For example, drop a round fruit and a goldfish into a bowl. Or mix toy goldfish in a pile and ask your child to pick them up. Practice the same game with other things like socks that are the same color; toy cars with 4 wheels or round blocks.

3. Clapping

Most parents love teaching their children to clap their hands in praise, while singing or playing. In addition, clapping also helps children learn pre-math skills such as clapping in rhythm (1-2), patterns and helps them predict what will come next. Turn on some music and clap and dance with your child. You can give your child a drum to clap and teach them to clap in 1-2.

4. Counting

Songs with counting numbers are a simple suggestion for you when teaching your child. As you sing, emphasize the part with the counting, for example: “There are 5 monkeys jumping on the bed”. Then, move your fingers to represent 5 monkeys. Continue singing: “There were 5 monkeys, one ran away. Now there are only 1-2-3 and 4 monkeys left”.

Other ideas for teaching your child to count: Count the stripes on your child’s shirt; the number of stairs; the number of toy wheels on the table; number of fish cakes on the plate… Don’t be disappointed if your baby isn’t interested, as you have plenty of time to experiment with him.
